They survived internment at Auschwitz-Birkenau during the Holocaust. (They escaped too, although that may have been pure luck on their part.) They've seen the Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, 9/11, and the War on Terrorism/Iraq War come and go. It's nothing new. Nothing can compare to the horrors of Hitler's regime to them.

Now, in the year 2360 CE, the human race is dying out, and the over-populated vampire race is at war with itself. It's the sophisticated vampires versus the savages, and just like in Nazi Germany, Alphonse and Mina find themselves in the middle of another genocidal war they never wanted any part in.

Some nights it just doesn't pay to get out of bed.

* * *

Rest of info post is coming soon. ^^;

Since then, her boyfriend, Arata Deguchi, has been possessed by a demon, she's got an annoying Ancient Egyptian spirit trying to teach her magic, and worse yet, a god is out to kill her.

And that's on top of school. And to make matters about as hellish as possible, Kiyami's friends are slowly being dragged into the equation. Which is the last thing Kiyami wants.

* * *

< < < N A V I G A T I O N > > >

[ Basics ] || [ Characters ] || [ Demons ] || [ Council of the Gods ] || [ Elements ] || [ How Magic Works ]

Basics

“Legacy” is set in modern-day Japan and follows the initially-mundane life of Maruyama Kiyami, a 16 year old high school student. Kiyami has a rare ability to practice a lost form of magic, which she discovers on a trip to Egypt with her family.

Kiyami’s newfound world is filled with demons, spirits, and Very Angry Gods, as she soon learns when she meets Neferkhered, her spirit guide, and when her boyfriend, Arata, is possessed by a demon spirit.

Terminology for spellcasters is relatively simple: a male magic user is a Sorcerer. A female magic user is a Chantress (heset-netjer).

* * *

Characters

Maruyama Kiyami
The main character and heroine, Kiyami is a back-talking high school Freshman who was born with "The Gift". She is currently training to be a Chantress, or sorceress.

Neferkhered
Neferkhered was a Khemetic Chantress before she was died, at age 39, of exhaustion from battling and defeating Sefet-Ne-Seki. In modern times, she is training Kiyami to be a sorceress, but to Kiyami she is more of a nuisance than a help. Neferkhered has done all she can to change Kiyami's path, but in the end, Kiyami must change it herself. Neferkhered becomes mortal for a day in the modern world thanks to the gods, who feel she needs to show a little leniency towards Kiyami and therefore wish her to experience the world as it is today for just one day. She later returns to her spirit state. Neferkhered's name means "Beautiful Child".

Deguchi Arata
Arata is Kiyami's only male friend, her crush, and eventually her boyfriend. Arata doesn't know anything about Kiyami's double life until the god Set comes to him and places a demon soul within his mortal body, in order to make him kill Kiyami. Unable to rid her boyfriend of the demon soul, Kiyami binds and restrains the creature, essentially turning it over to her side. Arata's human soul is normally in control of his now demonic body, but the demon's soul surfaces whenever Set decides to make an appearance. Arata now has to get used to some new powers he now has, thanks to his transformation. He can attend school thanks to a masking spell performed by Kiyami. He tries to help Kiyami on the Supernatural front as much as possible.

Setesh
An evil Khemetic god who seeks to destroy Kiyami for some unknown reason. Neferkhered and Arata think it's because Kiyami was given The Gift, even though she wasn't Khemetic. He planted the soul of the fallen demon Sefet-Ne-Seki (Khemetic, "Sword of Death"; Pronounced "Say-feht-Nay-Seh-kee") into the mortal body of Arata Deguchi. As gods are the "mortal" enemies of demons, this didn't gain him favor amongst his fellows and eventually got him into huge trouble.

Sefet-Ne-Seki
The demon soul now living in Arata Deguchi's body, which only surfaces if Set is in Arata's immediate vicinity. A fallen demon who was defeated in ancient times by none other than Neferkhered, though this wasn't exactly an easy task: She herself died from exhaustion after defeating him. His powers once included summoning the Elements and a wide variety of other abilities. He is a humanoid demon with shoulder-length ebony hair, pointed ears, thin, straight eyebrows, slitted crimson eyes, four red streaks on either side of his face and similar streaks on his torso. His name means "Sword Of Death".

Seger-Neshny
Seger-Neshny is one of Kiyami’s demonic opponents, though she is more of an anti-hero than a true villain. Seger-Neshny hates both Setesh and Kiyami, Setesh because he tricked one of her brethren and Kiyami because she now “enslaves” Sefet-Ne-Seki. Though she usually attacks under the guise of hunting Sefet, as Sefet-Ne-Seki’s fellow demons have declared him a traitor, her true intentions are to destroy Kiyami and then Setesh. Seger-Neshny is a female, half-snake half-humanoid. She has a very powerful lower body capable of strangling opponents and venomous teeth. Her name means “Silent Rage”.

* * *

Demons

Demons are one of the primary obstacles for Kiyami, as many of them are attempting to take her out. Because she has now come into her powers, she is seen as a threat.

There is no demon “species”, per se. Demons are unique in appearance and abilities. They are innately mistrustful of the gods, and they despise humans, thinking them weak. Spellcasters are especially hated because they are some of the few humans who can actually kill a demon.

Demons refer to each other as “brothers and sisters” even though they are not related in any way. Demons can be killed through magic, but can usually “come back” by possessing a human, which is how Sefet-Ne-Seki returned to the world despite having been killed by Neferkhered.

* * *

The Council of the Gods

While in ancient times to Khemetic gods acted independently of one another, they now form a council for making major decisions, such as allowing non-Khemetic to use Khemetic magic. The Council was formed due to the decline of Khemetic religion; the Khemetic gods thought it best not to intervene in a world where they seemed no longer welcome unless they had to. Amun heads the council, with Ra and Osiris at his right hand. Setesh, Osiris's younger brother, was a former member, but was exiled after it was discovered he'd made a deal with a demon.

Neferkhered frequently contacts the Council now that she's training Kiyami, but Kiyami herself has never spoken to them. She keeps demanding to, but Neferkhered makes a fervent effort to ensure that she never meets them.

* * *

The Nine Elements

Yes, you read correctly. Nine.

There are nine Elements in the Legacy world: Water, Ice, Earth, Flora, Fire, Lightning, Wind, Light, and Dark. Water, Ice, Wind, Flora, and Light are used primarily defensively, while Earth, Fire, Lightning, and Dark are use primarily for offense.

Water
Water was a blessing to the Khemetic people, as they lived in the middle of a desert. Sorcerers calling on its power were seen as especially gifted by the people of Khemet. The Khemetic word for water is “meu”; a Sorcerer specializing in Water can flood an entire are, breathe underwater, or walk on water.

Ice
Frozen water was something the Khemetic people probably never experienced, but its power was something that they could access nonetheless, thanks to Thoth and Isis, the god and goddess of magic. The word used to call on Ice is “hes”, which means “to freeze”. Ice magic practioners can coat the ground in ice to reduce friction (a strategy Kiyami used against Arata/Sefet-Ne-Seki, as Sefet has poor balance), create weapons of solid ice, chill the area (mostly for comfort reasons), or keep an opponent rooted to the ground by encasing their feet.

Earth
The power of the Earth was used most commonly among sorcerers, as it is the Element they have the most access to. The word for Earth is “ta”; Earth Sorcerers can create giant fissures, earthquakes, sandstorms, turn the ground to mud, encase a person in rock to keep them immobile, and sculpt stone.

Flora
From the Earth also comes plantlife, which a few Sorcerers control. Plants are used almost exclusively for defense and confusion; the word for plant magic is “hesep”, meaning “garden”. Sorcerers using Flora Magic can create entire magical mazes, or trap an opponent in vines, among other abilities.

Fire
Fire comes from heat, something the Khemetic people were intensly familiar with. Fire has few defensive spells. The word for Fire is “sedjet”. Fire Magic can be used to burn or even kill opponents, formed into projectiles (Fireball!), or used simply as light.

Lightning
Though Khemet got little in the way of rain, an occasional storm popped up, complete with thunder and lightning. The Khemetic people didn’t have a word for lightning itself, so to call on its power (which is intensly difficult), Sorcerers use a composite phrase: “hedj-hi-i-em-pet”, meaning “a bright strike from the sky”. Lightning Magic is used exclusively for the purpose of destroying something or striking it down.

Wind
Wind was frequently experienced in Khemet, especially out in the deserts; sorcerers can call on wind for primarily defensive purposes. The word for wind is “tjaw”. Wind Sorcerers can fly, create tornados, and keep their enemies as far away from them as possible by creating huge torrents of wind to act as a barrier.

Light
Light was also innately familiar to the Khemetic people. The sun was divine for them. Their word for Light Magic is the same as the word for day: “herew”. Light Magic can be used to heal, to create guides, and as a light source.

Dark
Where there is light, there is inevitably darkness. Few Sorcerers practiced Dark Magic, but those who did were mistrusted greatly. The word for Dark Magic is the same as the word for Night: “gereh”. Dark magic is used to blind and poison, and to inflict injury.

* * *

How Magic Works

Magic calls on nature, or the power of a god. Words are used to invoke the power, frequently long verses for large spells, but also smaller phrases in the case of Elemental magic. Only those born with a certain trait have the ability to access magic, and they always have shock white hair. Traditionally only Khemetic people were chosen to use magic, but now that they are gone, the gods have begun choosing non-Khemetics to practice magic, for instance, Kiyami.

Sorcerers typically write their own spells, occasionally borrowing from other sorcerers. To do this requires fluency in Khemetic, as no other language will access the powers of Khemetic magic. Kiyami has shown an ability to apply Khemetic magic to Japanese concepts, such as prayer scrolls.

To use Magic takes practice and dedication. A Sorcerer’s powers grow as he continues to practice his spells, and eventually, where he could originally create only a tiny flame, he will be able to set an entire area alight.

She's a thief. And she can teleport, or Hop, at will. she and her partners in crime—Naomi Miles and brothers Jac and Seth Vaughn—run their operation out of an elementary school several miles out of Washington DC.

Don't worry, the school's abandoned.

The goal is to find rare artefacts of magical power so they can fight the most powerful—and decidedly the most evil—Magus in the world: Icarus, the self-proclaimed Dictator/Ruler of America.

No pressure, really.

* * *

< < < N A V I G A T I O N > > >
[ Basics ] || [ Characters ] || [ Laws of Magic ] || [ How Magic Works ] || [ Technology ]

Basics

“Running From Time” takes place in a world very similar to our own. Technology has advanced slightly farther than it has now, and there are many Magi, or magic users, spread throughout the world. Non-magic-users are called Mundanes.

A Good-aligned Magus is called a Witch. An Evil-aligned Magus is called a Warlock. Nothing is ever really black and white, however; someone who may be considered a Witch might also be doing something that breaks the many laws set in place that limit the use of magic, but have perfectly good intentions. Likewise, a Warlock may act as though he is acting for the better of the community, but his actions are still evil.

Enter the heroes of the story, a group of three Witches and thieves. Jac, Regan, and Naomi (along with Jac’s little brother, Seth, an expert hacker, technophile, and gamer extraordinaire), have set up an operation running out of an abandoned Elementary School. They live there too. They have been stealing valuables in search of an artifact which will help them take down a Warlock, Icarus, who threatens the entire Magi population. And maybe a few of the Mundanes as well.

* * *

Characters

Jac Vaughn
Jac is the leader of the group of heroes/thieves; he is calm, collected, dedicated, and focused. Very rarely does he panic or spazz, and when he does, all it amounts to is a huge chewing out, usually focused on himself. He specializes in offensive magic, particularly projectile spells.

Jac is tall and lanky, with longish black hair (about to his shoulders). He is 23 years old, and an orphan, meaning he has to take care of his little brother, Seth.
Played By: Cillian Murphy

Naomi Miles
Naomi is the First Mate to Jac’s Captain. She and Jac have known each other for ages. She is rather relaxed, tending to flop down on a chair, cat-like, and lie there when she has nothing to do. She is sarcastic and possesses a biting wit few can match. She specializes in defensive spellwork, mostly protective circles and barriers.

Naomi is skinny, with shoulder-length brown hair. She is 22.
Played By: Diane Lane

Regan Doyle
Regan is the runt of the litter, so to speak; Jac and Naomi appear to keep her around simply because she is useful. She has a rather unique ability to teleport between locations by opening dimensional portals, which she can occasionally use to hop time as well. She does other kinds of spellwork as well, though she favours Elemental magic.

Regan has fiery red hair, which she keeps in many tiny braids. She dresses in a gothic style, though she hates makeup and doesn’t wear any. She is 19 years old.
Played By: Alison Sudol

Seth Vaughn
Seth is Jac’s younger brother, and though he is a Mundane, he is excellent at computers and technology. He loves video games, particularly RPGs, and is by all accounts, an uber-geek. Seth is not allowed to participate in runs, other than to stay at the base and guide the three Witches through their location and to their goal. He complains about this often, but Jac usually doesn’t listen.

Seth has short, spiky black hair and is rather short for his age. He almost constantly has a pair of headphones blaring rock music (usually metal) around his neck and can usually be found playing his latest favourite video game.
Played By: Seth Green

Icarus
Icarus rose to power over many nations in the world about ten years ago, and since then has made some very restricting laws regarding the use of Magic. No-one knows he’s a Warlock, and very much desires to be the last Magus remaining in the entire world. Many Witches have tried to take him down, and have been killed. With each attempt, Icarus only seems to grow stronger.

It is Icarus that the main characters seek to take down, though they must find out how he is managing to get stronger and stronger despite all the attempts to kill him, which should’ve left him weakened.

Icarus's name comes the Greek legend; the Greek Icarus thought he could fly to the Sun on mechanical wings. The wings burned up and he fell back to the ground.
Played By: Billy Drago

Jade Orion
Jade is Seth's rival, a talented hacker who can match Seth move for move and occassionally beat him as well. She shows up at the school one day hoping to forge an alliance with the Thieves. Regan mistrusts her the whole time and probably envies the attention Seth gives her as well.

Jade has green eyes and dyed-peroxide-white hair. She is 19 years old. Jade Orion is apparently an assumed name, though no-one knows what her real name is.
Played By: Michelle Yeoh

The Artificer
The Artificer specializes in enchanting objects. He's a mysterious old man who comes off as extremely creepy. At some point the Thieves opt to employ him but are extremely unnerved by his presence. No-one knows what his real name is.

The Artificer was created by damostaranth, who has given permission for him to be used in RFT.
Played By: Christopher Lloyd

* * *

Laws of Magic

There are three basic Laws surrounding the use of Magic.

I.	Magic may not be used to violate Mundane Laws.
II.	Magic may not be used to violate or otherwise control the mind of a Mundane.
III.	Magic may not be used in Public locations.

Magic may not be used to violate Mundane Laws.

Essentially, this means that Magi cannot use magic to steal, kill, etc.

Magic may not be used to violate or otherwise control the mind of a Mundane.

This prohibits the use of spells that possess Mundanes, or otherwise alter their state of mind, such as Truth Spells, or Love Spells.

Magic may not be used in Public locations

This prohibits the practice of Magic where people can see you. Mundanes are often scared of Magic; using it in public has the potential to cause mass mayhem.

Anyone who is caught breaking any of these Laws is typically brought before Icarus; nobody knows what happens then, but the violators rarely see the light of day again.

* * *

How Magic Works

Magic comes from a person’s spirit and willpower. One only need to look within themselves to find the fuel to perform spells.

Despite this, a lot of Magi train themselves by using rituals and words to access certain abilities. The words are almost always Irish Gaelic, as Ireland has frequently been associated with magic in the past. The trained trigger words remind the Magus to draw on the desired ability. Naomi’s trigger word for her barrier spells is “balla”, for instance.

In addition, some Magi have special abilities that are connected to their innate ability to use magic, like Regan’s dimensional portals. In these cases the Magus will typically train themselves to access this ability with a trigger word, like they would for their magic. Regan uses the phrase “bealach isteach” to access her ability to make dimensional portals.

Drawing too much magic at once can leave one physically and mentally exhausted. Magi must be careful and know their limits, as overusing magic can lead to a coma or death. There are rumours that a Magus could be able to draw the magic from other Magi, but doing so would surely earn him the title of Warlock.

* * *

Technology

Technology has advanced a lot from our current point of development. Here are some examples of the technology the heroes use:

» Seth has a holographic “screen” that he can manipulate without a keyboard or mouse if he has some special devices on his fingers; the screen is sensitive to these devices and will react when he touches it, for instance moving images or calling up new programs or sections. Like a touch-screen, essentially.

» The group keeps records on small, round chips of runs that they’ve made and what each of them experienced on them; these are inserted into a reader in Seth’s work area and played back.

» Jac, Naomi, and Regan use earpieces to keep in touch with Seth, who stays back at the base guiding them through their target during a run. These earpieces are barely noticeable and have a companion piece embedded in a molar in their mouths. They operate over long distances, and the group wears them constantly.

» A small camera is also used by each of the thieves to relay images back to Seth, and they all have tracking chips embedded in their backs; both allow Seth to know exactly where they are at all times.

As more ideas are thought up, I will add them. ^_^;;
